Excellent Source of Calcium

Calcium is the mineral found in most abundance in the human body, and it has several importance functions to keep us healthy. Calcium helps build and maintain bones and teeth, blood clotting, the transmission of nerve impulses and the regulation of the heart’s rhythm. Ninety-nine percent of the calcium in our bodies is stored in our bones and teeth, with the remaining one percent in the blood and other tissues. Calcium helps prevent osteoporosis, which is responsible for more than 1.5 million bone fractures each year.

We get calcium by eating foods such as dairy products and dark leafy greens or dried beans, all of which are good sources for highly-absorbable calcium. * The recommended dairy servings are based on the NAS calcium recommendations. A serving size of dairy equals 1 cup (8 ounces) of milk, 1 cup of yogurt and 1 to 1.5 ounces of cheese.
** Serving sizes for children ages 1-3 are two-thirds the adult size. For example, a serving of milk for kids ages 1-3 is 6 ounces, rather than the 8 ounce size for older kids, teens and adults.
